This Old House® Project

The PBS series This Old House® worked with Mi Casa Inc. to chronicle the rehabilitation of a circa 1879 Italianate brick row house located just ten blocks from the White House in the Shaw neighborhood. Mi Casa Inc. is a Washington, DC-based, non-profit organization that builds and renovates homes for sale to low and moderate-income families and provides technical assistance to tenant purchase projects. Mi Casa Inc. was selected through a "request for proposal" process as the developer of this home by the Mayor's Home Again Initiative, a program designed to help eliminate blight throughout the city. Thus far, Mi Casa Inc. has been the successful bidder on eight Home Again properties and has completed and sold three of them.

In 2006 Pointing Plus Inc. was contracted to restore a building for Mi Casa Inc. Mi Casa Inc is a non-profit organization providing affordable single-family home ownership. The election process for this job required a referral from the Historic Preservation Office of Washington DC and a formal interview at the project site to discuss planning and organization of the work. This project was seen by all of America on This Old House® Television show. Still to this day viewing of past episodes of our crew working on this project can be seen on HGTV® "This Old House classics®". This is a great chance for any homeowner or contractor to get acquainted with the planning and techniques involved in a restoration project.

In photo 1 you will find a Re-built corbelled brick cornice. The original brick and mortar had been replaced by cement and un-matching brick during a quick fix after the building was destroyed in a fire. To properly repair the cornice the old brick and mortar was removed and replaced by a brick found and matched by Pointing Plus Inc.

Pointing Plus Inc. used a picture from decades before provided by the Historic Preservation office to Rebuild the cornice. This building and others in DC have helped Pointing Plus Inc. to expand into a group of highly experienced craftsman.

This building involved:
  • paint stripping,
  • removal of carbon deposits
  • and rebuilding in concentrated areas.

To make the job even more difficult, restoration took place in the cold month of January. (If you were a resident of the District during January of 2006 you can recall the cold windstorms.) Almost 3 years later the lime and sand blend mortar on the building is still as strong as ever! During and after restoration the facade had to be heated to keep the brick work from freezing. At completion on a cold winter day mayor of Washington DC, Anthony Williams performed the ribbon cutting on the building. We at Pointing Plus Inc. would like to thank Washington DC for allowing us to be involved with projects such as this one. We will continue to grow into a company dedicated to preservation excellence.

Caernarfon Castle
Work study program in Wales and Northern England.

Education about masonry can help our ability to further understand how to restore historic masonry in America. Owner, Danny Palousek, has achieved this through attending numerous seminars and lectures across the globe to find improved ways to restore historic masonry buildings. One excursion included a trip to England with students and contractors from Traditional Building Skills Institute. (Years earlier, Danny was a student in a masonry restoration course with some of the same students). Upon arriving in England, the group drove to Wales to stay close to their first project.

"That night it was hard to sleep with all the anticipation of working on a castle over 1000 years old" said Danny.

After three days of working on the historic building, the group started their tour of all masonry structures of significance across Wales ending in York England. In York, the group was able to observe and learn from third generation masons who worked most of their lives replacing stones on the York Minster.
